Hensel Phelps Senior Estimator - Bay Area in San Jose, California

Senior Estimators are the Company’s "cost management representative" who assist in establishing preliminary budgets and final cost estimates. In this role you will be supporting the Chief Estimator with support from other estimators in the department. The Senior Estimator is experienced in all aspects of procurement for hard bid, conceptual, and design-build projects, as well as preconstruction cost controls involving cost estimating, cost analysis, and value engineering. They perform cost estimates for all phases of design (schematic design, design development, and construction documents) and assist the total team (owner, designer, builder, and user) in achieving the common goal of completing projects within budget and without sacrificing quality.

Essential job functions include:

  • Lead effective purchasing including writing subcontracts/purchase agreements

  • Develop procurement strategies and follow through at bid time

  • Develop subcontractor/supplier relationships

  • Develop architect/owner relationships

  • Proficient at conceptual estimating using assembly pricing

  • Proficiency in computer skills. Able to adapt and learn programs such as On Screen Take-Off, iSqFt, MC2 and 3D programs like Scenario

  • Maintain company standards and ethics

  • Outside of office participation with local subcontracting community

  • Personnel evaluation and development

The position may require the new hire to be assigned to a project with specific badging or other security requirements, which may require the Company, Owner, or third party to conduct a criminal or other background check.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Vast experience in various contract delivery types (ie. Hard bid, CM@R, Design/Build)

  • Expertise in conceptual estimating and hard bid environments

  • Exhibit excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Computer software - Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in estimating large commercial construction projects

  • A 4 year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture or Construction Management
